Spring Cleaning? Donate your Unwanted Items to Charity Where it Can Go a Long Ways

Posted on April 7, 2012 by Be Chicagood

The warm weather is here in Chicago meaning the annual spring cleaning rituals are kicking into full gear. This year why not do some spring cleaning with purpose? There are several ways you can ensure the items you don’t need find homes and be put to good use.

Huffington Post recently posted an article with suggestions to some charities that are in need of a few supplies. So when you’re tossing out that old sofa or can of paint, keep in mind how it can be utilized at a local charity and how they’d be able to put it to good use. Your unwanted goods can help these non profits out a lot!

Another great resource to tap into is DonorsChoose.org, who will pair your unwanted goods to classrooms that need it. You can browse a list of classroom projects and find a project you think your goods will benefit.

Even better, let me introduce you to a great start up called Zealous Good. Zealous Good is started up by Britney Graunke who has experience in the non profit sector working at United Way. I had the chance to listen to her at the monthly Technori Pitch in Chicago where startups showcase and pitch their projects to an audience. Zealous Good is a Chicago centric start up that pairs donors and their goods with charities. It’s a pretty simple process. You let Zealous Good know on their website what goods you want to donate, and Zealous Good will go and find out what charities want your goods. You then have the luxury of choosing the charity you feel will best utilize it or a charity that champions the cause you care about the most. Once you have chosen the charity, Zealous Good will provide you with the contact information and schedule an exchange time and location. Pretty neat!

Feel good and do some Chicagood this year while doing some Spring cleaning.
